Breville Bambino BES450
Compact machine · separate grinder required
Breville Barista Express BES870XL
Integrated grinder · manual milk texturing
The Breville Bambino BES450 and Barista Express BES870XL use a 54 mm portafilter and ask the user to prepare the coffee puck and texture milk. They differ in one structural choice: the Bambino is an espresso machine without a grinder, while the Barista Express adds an integrated conical burr grinder, hopper, dosing controls, and pressure gauge in the same body.
That choice influences the complete station. A Bambino is narrow, but a grinder beside it can consume more total counter width than the Barista Express. The two-piece setup can also be easier to upgrade. A Barista Express is self-contained, but the built-in grinder and brewer age together.
Bambino vs Barista Express overview
| Decision point | Breville Bambino BES450 | Breville Barista Express BES870XL |
|---|---|---|
| Grinder | None | Integrated conical burr grinder |
| Width | 6.25 inches published | 12.5 inches published |

| Strongest fit | Modular compact espresso station | All-in-one manual espresso station |
Neither machine is fully automatic. A button can stop a programmed shot volume, but the user remains responsible for grind, dose, distribution, tamp, portafilter insertion, milk texture, and cleanup. Results depend on technique and coffee.
Budget for the complete Bambino station
The Bambino requires ground coffee suitable for espresso. Buying pre-ground coffee is possible with the supplied dual-wall basket, but grind freshness and particle size are outside your control. A capable burr grinder gives the machine a more useful adjustment range and lets you use the single-wall baskets as intended.
Include grinder, scale, knock box, tamping surface, cleaning supplies, and milk pitcher in the station budget. The Bambino includes core accessories, but your workflow may require a grinder that costs as much as or more than the brewer. This is not an argument against the Bambino; it is the cost of modularity.
The modular setup allows the grinder to be replaced without replacing the espresso machine. It also supports a grinder chosen for low retention, decaf switching, or a particular adjustment mechanism. Those benefits matter to buyers who expect their coffee preferences to evolve.
What the Barista Express integrates
The Barista Express stores beans in a hopper and grinds directly toward the portafilter. Its dose control, integrated tamper storage, and included dosing funnel reduce the number of separate pieces on the counter. For a household using one primary bean, the workflow is coherent.
The integrated grinder provides a finite adjustment range and uses timed volumetric dosing rather than weighing beans and output. Many users will still benefit from a scale while learning. Bean density changes by roast and age, so the same timer setting does not always produce the same mass.
An integrated hopper is inconvenient for frequent regular-to-decaf switching. Beans remain above and within the burrs. Purging wastes coffee. A second small grinder or pre-ground bypass is not built into this manual portafilter workflow.
Heat-up time and thermal routine
Breville publishes a three-second ready state for the Bambino’s ThermoJet system. That means the heater reaches operating readiness quickly; it does not mean the portafilter, cup, and group are fully warmed under every condition. A cold metal path can absorb heat from a small espresso.
Use the official preheating and blank-shot guidance. Warm the portafilter and cup when temperature stability matters. The total routine includes weighing and grinding beans, puck preparation, extraction, and milk, so heater time is only one component.
The Barista Express takes longer to reach its intended state but integrates grinding during the same station routine. Plan a consistent warm-up rather than beginning extraction the instant a light changes. Follow Breville’s instructions instead of leaving either appliance powered indefinitely.
Grind, dose, distribute, tamp
Both machines use a 54 mm portafilter and include single- and dual-wall baskets. Single-wall baskets reward a suitably fine, consistent grind and precise preparation. Dual-wall baskets create additional resistance and can be more forgiving with pre-ground or less uniform coffee.
Start with a repeatable dose appropriate to the basket. Distribute grounds evenly and tamp level. A tilted or uneven puck encourages water to find weak paths, making extraction inconsistent. Do not overfill the basket until the shower screen contacts the dry coffee.
Adjust grind before changing every other variable. If a shot runs too quickly, move finer in small steps; if it barely flows, move coarser. Use time and beverage mass as diagnostic information, not as universal rules divorced from taste and the manufacturer’s basket design.
Milk steaming
Both machines require manual milk texturing. The user introduces air near the surface, then positions the wand to circulate milk while monitoring temperature. This is a learned motor skill. The Bambino and Barista Express do not provide the hands-free temperature and texture control found on a Barista Touch or automatic machine.
Purge the wand before and after use as directed. Wipe it immediately with a damp cloth while residue is fresh, keeping hands clear of hot metal and steam. If the tip holes block, use the specified cleaning tool only after the wand cools.
Steam performance and transition behavior differ between heating platforms, but published specifications cannot substitute for comparable hands-on measurements. Buyers making several large milk drinks in succession should prioritize observed recovery and workflow evidence from a trusted test source.
Counter space is a two-dimensional problem
The Bambino body is only 6.25 inches wide in Breville’s specification. Add the chosen grinder’s width, cord path, grounds cup or portafilter position, tamping mat, and knock box. Two narrow appliances also need a gap for access and cleaning.
The Barista Express is 12.5 inches wide and 13.8 inches deep in the current official listing, with top clearance needed for its hopper and rear water tank. It consolidates functions but may require pulling forward to refill under cabinets.
Draw the complete station on paper or tape it on the counter. Include the side on which you hold the portafilter, pitcher movement, scale, and where wet tools land. A theoretically compact setup can be awkward if every action crosses the sink or stove.
Cleaning and water care
After each session, knock out the puck, rinse the basket and portafilter, purge and wipe the wand, and empty the tray when needed. Backflush or run the cleaning cycle using the process specified for the model. Coffee oils and mineral scale require different maintenance.
Test local water and follow Breville’s filter and descaling guidance. Do not use distilled water without approval and do not improvise strong acids. Scale can affect flow and temperature; overly soft water can also create sensing or flavor issues.
The grinder in the Barista Express adds burr, hopper, and chute cleaning. Empty beans safely and follow the dry-cleaning method. Water must not enter the grinder. The Bambino’s separate grinder has its own manual and may be easier to move to a cleaning area.
Repair and upgrade path
With the Bambino, grinder failure does not stop the espresso heater from being serviced separately, and grinder upgrades are straightforward. The downside is two warranties, two power cords, and two service relationships.
The Barista Express offers one integrated appliance and support path. If either the grinder or brewer needs repair, the whole station may be unavailable. Replacement parts and official service access should be checked before purchase.
Who should choose the Bambino?
The Bambino fits a small kitchen when there is a sensible location for a separate grinder, or an enthusiast who wants to choose that grinder independently. It also suits someone who already owns an espresso-capable grinder. It is a poor fit when the buyer expects the low machine price to represent the entire setup.
Who should choose the Barista Express?
The Barista Express fits a buyer who wants one coherent station, uses one main bean, and is willing to learn manual espresso and milk. It is less suitable for frequent bean switching or an owner who already expects to upgrade the grinder.
Buying checklist
- Price the Bambino with an espresso-capable burr grinder and scale.
- Measure the complete two-appliance station, not only the Bambino.
- Measure top and rear access for the Barista Express hopper and tank.
- Decide whether bean switching or future grinder upgrades matter.
- Confirm comfort with a 54 mm portafilter and manual steam wand.
- Review single-wall versus dual-wall basket use.
- Check water filtration, cleaning-cycle, descaling, and wand-care requirements.
- Verify BES450 or BES870XL and the current official warranty route.
The Bambino is the better modular building block. The Barista Express is the better integrated starting station. Neither removes the practice that manual espresso requires, so choose the architecture you want to learn and maintain.
