Diagnose the draft first

Read the content as a member of the intended audience. Does it answer a clear question? Are the facts available? Does the structure make sense? Are sentences understandable? Are the remaining issues mostly spelling and punctuation?

Different answers point to different services. Do not choose the cheapest label and expect the freelancer to repair every layer of the work. Share a representative sample and ask what type of intervention they propose.

Match the service to the problem

These are editorial distinctions, not a guarantee that every marketplace listing uses identical terminology. Ask the freelancer to describe the work included rather than relying on the service name.

A proofreader may notice a structural problem without being commissioned to rebuild the article. An editor may improve readability without independently checking every technical claim.

Provide the context an editor needs

Supply the audience, purpose, publication venue, target length, and style requirements. Explain what must remain intact: quotations, technical terms, approved wording, or a personal voice.

Give access to relevant source material and identify uncertain claims. If the piece covers a specialized area, decide who will review technical accuracy. Do not expect an unnamed “expert review” unless the reviewer and scope are actually established.

For original writing, agree whether the freelancer is expected to interview people, research primary sources, or work solely from a supplied pack. Those tasks affect time and price.

Use a sample to calibrate intervention

For a long project, a paid sample edit can show how aggressively the editor changes structure and voice. Choose a passage that represents the real difficulties, not the cleanest paragraph.

An illustrative brief might request one article reorganized around three reader questions, with tracked changes and notes on unsupported claims. It might exclude new interviews and publication in the CMS.

Review meaning, not just polish

Check that the edited version preserves accurate meaning and necessary qualifications. A smoother sentence can become less precise if an important limitation disappears.

For rewritten work, compare the central argument and evidence against the original intent. For proofreading, inspect the agreed corrections and any queries. Avoid expanding a final proofreading pass into a new content strategy without acknowledging the scope change.

Do not treat an automated detector or readability number as a complete acceptance decision. Read the actual work and verify important claims.

Keep an editorial record

Save the source draft, edited version, accepted final copy, and unresolved questions. Identify who approved publication. For ongoing content, turn recurring corrections into a style sheet so each new assignment starts with better instructions.

If the draft needs more work than expected, pause and agree the additional scope. The goal is usable content with a clear review trail, not merely a document marked “edited.”
